Once Upon A Grime Meets ZDot [Interview]

This year, the young producer known as ZDot has been putting the work in. Recently two of the names Z has worked with includes Dollar Da Dustman and Ghetts. There's been constant releases from Z, and he's looking to continue this throughout 2010. Check the interview below to see what else he's got up his sleeve...

Name: ZDot
Age: 19
Location: London
Collective: Go Getters
Occupation: Record Producer/Composer

OUaG: For those who are new to Grime, care to introduce yourself?

ZDot: I’m a producer from West London, producing a range of music including Grime, R&B, Rap, Commercial and many more. I’m also the producer of the Underground hits 'Artillery' and 'Canary Remix'.

OUaG: How did you get into producing? Did you ever spit or have you always solely produced music?

ZDot: From the age of 10 I was playing the African drums and the drum kit. When I got to 12 i started making beats on 'Magix Music Maker' which was a simple software for creating music.

OUaG: This year you’ve worked closely with Dollar Da Dustman and even released an EP with him (Go Getterish). How did this link up come about?

ZDot: It came about when my mate 'Brutes/Brutality' vocalled one of my beats featuring Dollar, Warlock and Yello Boy - 'Hard as Nails'. Since that track me and Dollar have created 2 EP's, a rap CD 'From A Hustler 2 My Hustlers' and released many videos.

OUaG: What else have you got lined up with Dollar?

ZDot: I’ve produced most of his album 'The Art of Rhyming' which should be out later this year; we’re also planning on doing a joint CD, maybe 50/50 vocals & instrumentals. We’re always in studio, so there will be a lot more music coming.

OUaG: As well as working with Dollar, you’ve got a few productions on Ghetts’ forthcoming album – Calm before the Storm. How many exactly? And yet again, how did this link up come about?

ZDot: I’ve got five productions on there including the bonus 'Destruction of the Eiffel Tower'. The link with Ghetts came about through hard work. He had heard vocals from other MCs on my beats that were around him and I met him in studio one day, gave him 'Artillery' and the rest is history!

OUaG: What have you got coming out yourself as an individual? Any EPs we should keep an eye out for?

ZDot: Yeah, I’ve got an instrumental project - 'Fire Power E.P' - which should be out in the next two to three months. That’ll feature Artillery, Dirty Date, Canary and A few other beats. I’ve also been working with a group of up n coming artists and I should be releasing the first volume of that for free download during the summer. As well as this, I’ve also been working on my own mixtape which should hopefully be out towards the end of the year.

OUaG: The ‘up-and-coming’ artists, are they Grime? Or from another genre? Can you name any names?

ZDot: They’re from both Grime and rap. The names include Blizzard, Skilzie, Skanx, D-bo, R.E.C, D Capital E, Sketchman & many more. The project is called 'The New Wave’.

OUaG: What do you think of the new sound of Grime? As you’ve said, you’re working with a group of the youngers coming through the scene. Do you prefer the new sound, or the days of Dizzee Rascal, Kano and old school Wiley?

ZDot: In terms of quality music, Grime is in a better place now then it was in previous years as the level of both production and song writing has been raised. The young artists bring a much needed energy to the scene, which a lot of the older MCcs lose as they age.

OUaG: Kano once infamously said “it’s the vocals that make it”. Throughout 2009 we saw in Grime more focus on the producers, and this has carried on in 2010. Do you think that this statement which was made back in 2005 is now clearly wrong?

ZDot: At this exact moment in Grimes history that statement couldn’t be more wrong. But when he made that statement, maybe he was right?

OUaG: Why do you think that everyone is starting to take more notice with who’s produced the beat compared to how it used to be half a decade ago?

ZDot: Partly because the level of production has improved so much, and the fact that producers have started releasing more CDs/digital EP’s etc. Also, the MCs have probably slowed down with their progression within Grime.

OUaG: Finally, any lasting words you want to say as we end this interview?

ZDot: Big up All the Supporters, if you haven’t got a copy of 'Go Getterish E.P', you can download it from iTunes, Amazon, Tesco & Many More.

Big up yourself for the interview Graeme.

  1. Boring and predictable. Leave interviews to people who know what they're talking about.
